Improving visual connectivity and accessibility in a dense urban node

Workflow

The most famous street in downtown LA, of South Grand avenue, is flanked by the Broad museum, Walt Disney concert hall etc. Often these art and architectural attractions fail to lend a character to the street. This is due to the distance and the lack of visibility and connectivity.

By importing the site map via GIS plug in for grasshopper called Meerkat, the 3d view can be put under the test by associating points at tourist locations. The location of these points can be obtained through real time twitter data tweeted by visitors. After flattening these location points the visibility range from each selected tourist destination like MOCA, Broad museum, Walt Disney concert hall, Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and Grand Park can be determined using Isovist.

This method can help in implementing design solutions for the above mentioned street thus improving the visibility and connectivity amongst the public. The design solutions can range from adding bike paths, bifurcating roads and adding food truck and art display areas.
